Joseph Tanner is a former NASA astronaut and a mechanical engineer, born in Danville, Illinois, on 21 January 1950. He flew four Space Shuttle missions: STS-66 in 1994, STS-82 in 1997, STS-97 in 2000 and STS-115 in 2006. NASA selected him in 1992 after an unsuccessful application in 1987. Wikipedia notes he was unusual among astronauts in having no flight-test background and no advanced academic degree; he came through operational military flying. STS-82 was a servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. Wikidata records 43 days and 13 hours in space. He later taught at the University of Colorado Boulder.
