Gregory Jarvis (1944–1986) was an American electrical engineer at Hughes Aircraft. Hughes selected him as a payload specialist, and he was assigned to Challenger STS-51-L, where he planned to run fluid-dynamics experiments in weightlessness. The shuttle broke apart 73 seconds after launch on January 28, 1986, and all seven crew members died. He never reached space. The Rogers Commission traced the accident to a failed seal in a solid rocket booster joint. He was 41. The crew is remembered at the Challenger memorial in Arlington National Cemetery.
