Humans in space

Everyone who has flown in space, from Yuri Gagarin on 12 April 1961 to the crews of the last few months. The table lists when each person first flew, how many flights they have made, the missions and the time they have spent in space. Names that have a page of their own are the people our videos are about.

  • 694people have flown in space
  • 46countries and former states
  • 8flights: the most by one person (Gennadi Strekalov and Sergei Krikalev)
  • 1,110 daysthe longest total, Oleg Kononenko

How these numbers are counted

A person is counted if Wikidata records time in space for them, or lists them as crew on a crewed flight that has launched. Backup crew who never flew are left out, and so are the seven people of Challenger STS-51-L, who died before reaching space. A “flight” is each vehicle a person rode: someone who launched on one spacecraft and came home on another has two flights, so the count can be higher than an agency’s mission count. Time in space is blank where Wikidata has no figure, which is most private and suborbital passengers.
