Roger Chaffee (1935–1967), born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was a US Navy officer, aviator and aeronautical engineer. NASA selected him as an astronaut in 1963, and he was assigned as pilot of Apollo 1, which would have been his first spaceflight. On January 27, 1967, he died with Gus Grissom and Ed White in a cabin fire during a launch rehearsal on the pad. He never flew in space. The investigation led to major changes to the Apollo spacecraft before crewed flights resumed. He was 31.
