Artemis
Artemis is NASA’s programme to return people to the Moon and build a permanent base there. It was formally established in 2017 under Space Policy Directive-1. Its main hardware is the Space Launch System, the Orion spacecraft with its European Service Module, and a Human Landing System that private companies are developing under contract. Artemis I flew uncrewed around the Moon in 2022. Artemis II carried four astronauts on a lunar flyby in April 2026, the first crewed trip around the Moon since Apollo 17. Artemis III is next on the plan. International partners join through the Artemis Accords.

Artemis III
Artemis III was meant to be the landing. By 2026 the lunar landers were not ready and the Gateway station that Orion was to meet had been dropped, so NASA rebuilt the mission around what could fly in 2027.
