Zvezda, also called the Zvezda Service Module, is a module of the International Space Station and the third to be launched. It provides the station’s life support systems, which the US Orbital Segment supplements, and living quarters for two crew members. It is the structural and functional centre of the Russian Orbital Segment, and the crew gather there in an emergency. Energia built it in the Soviet Union, with major subcontracting by Khrunichev. A Proton rocket launched it on 12 July 2000, and it docked with Zarya on 26 July 2000. Until the Quest airlock arrived, Russian spacewalks in Orlan suits left through Zvezda.
