The Quest Joint Airlock is the primary airlock of the International Space Station, built so that spacewalks can use both American EMU suits and Russian Orlan suits. It launched on Space Shuttle mission STS-104 on 14 July 2001 and was attached to the starboard berthing port of Unity. Before Quest, Russian spacewalks in Orlan suits could only leave through the Zvezda service module, and American spacewalks in EMUs were only possible while a shuttle was docked and its airlock could be used. The Pirs docking compartment, which arrived on 16 September 2001, added another airlock for Orlan spacewalks.
