Space telescope
A space telescope mission puts an observatory in orbit or beyond, above the atmosphere that absorbs, scatters and blurs light. Lyman Spitzer suggested the idea in 1946. The Hubble Space Telescope reached orbit on a Space Shuttle, and astronauts visited it to repair and upgrade it, beginning with Hubble Servicing Mission 1. The James Webb Space Telescope and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope are also in this list. A space telescope can observe dim objects in daytime and is free of the light pollution ground observatories face. Some survey the whole sky; others stare at chosen targets.

James Webb Space Telescope
Webb is an infrared observatory built by NASA with ESA and the Canadian Space Agency. Where Hubble sees mostly visible light, Webb looks in the infrared, to see the first galaxies, look through dust, and study the atmospheres of planets around other stars.

The mission was cancelled once before it flew. After the loss of Columbia in 2003, NASA's administrator cancelled the visit on safety grounds, and only later reinstated it.

Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope
Roman has a mirror the size of Hubble's, 2.4 metres, but a camera that sees about 200 times more sky at once. It is an infrared survey telescope: it is built to look at a lot of sky and find things, which the narrower telescopes can then study.

Hubble Space Telescope
Hubble is a 2.4-metre telescope in low Earth orbit, built so that astronauts could service it. NASA and ESA built it to see the universe without the blur of the atmosphere, and to settle how fast the universe was expanding.
